Catcher Alyssa Hickman, 12, fields a bunt and throws to first on May 10 against Dripping Springs.

Jeremy Hickman felt a rush of excitement as he strolled toward the podium during the Kerrville Independent School District board meeting on Monday.

The Tivy softball coach is accustomed to delivering speeches, but Monday’s address was extra special — It gave him an opportunity to brag on his softball team to Kerrville’s leaders in education.

“It was very humbling to be in front of those people showing off my girls,” Hickman said. “I was very excited about the opportunity to tell the leaders and decision-makers of our school about how hard the girls had worked, and just how much they had accomplished this season.”

And they accomplished a lot this season. They captured their first district title in 20 years, went to playoffs for the first time in Hickman’s coaching tenure and advanced to the regional finals for the first time since 2001.

They have continued to receive accolades for their season. They were honored at Monday’s school board meeting; they will be recognized at the Rotary Club on Wednesday, and on Monday, they discovered that all 10 starters received all-district recognition.

Senior shortstop Marissa Medina was the District 26-5A MVP after slashing .706/.720/.1.252. Senior catcher Alyssa Hickman was the offensive MVP after hitting .575 with a team-high 11 home runs. while Kaitlyn Secor was district’s pitcher of the year after posting a 1.39 ERA in district play.

Campbell Grona, Amber Pintsch, Liz Twiss and Lexi Callcott were first-team selections. Lexi Perez and Hannah Delgado received second-team all-district honors. Paige Melcher received honorable mention recognition.

“It was awesome to see them really start to believe in themselves this season,” Hickman said. “In district play, some of the girls just played out of their minds and then the district coaches recognized with 10 of our 12 players being recognized
