SHREVEPORT, LA — The third-seeded Schreiner women’s basketball team knocked out host Centenary in the SCAC Tournament quarterfinals with a 78-65 win on Friday evening. The Mountaineers advance to face the tournament’s No. 2 seed Austin College on Saturday at 7 pm. SU is 2-0 against the Roos this season.
Led by senior Kelsie Jackson’s 20 points and eight rebounds, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 20-14 first-quarter lead and kept the Ladies at arm’s length by dominating the third quarter. Leading just 39-34 at the break, SU more than doubled Centenary in the third period, 22-10, and were in control the rest of the way. SU controlled the glass and won the battle of the boards 46-33.
In addition to Jackson’s contribution, Schreiner got 10 points from freshman Alina Hilliard and nine points each from senior Cassandra Aleman and freshman Dyamond Puebla.
SU had not reached the conference tournament until head coach Temaine Wright’s first season two years ago and now has not only been to the tournament three straight years, but has advanced to the semifinals each year. The Mountaineers have never advanced to the title game but is one win away from possibly changing that narrative this time.
