DeSales pitchers held the Schreiner offense to four hits in a 3-2 road win over the Mountaineers on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Brad Holmes had two of SU’s hits and drove in both Schreiner runs.
SU scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Senior Marco Carreon tripled and came home on Holmes’ single to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Schreiner head coach Ryan Brisban went with a committee effort on the mound, using five pitchers overall.
First up was sophomore Montana Hammack, who went the first two innings without allowing a run — or even a hit. Freshman Caleb Allen was next as he pitched the third and fourth innings and gave up one run to tie the score in the fourth.
The Mountaineers edged ahead in the bottom of the frame and it was the duo of Carreon and Holmes again. Carreon started the inning with a single, moved up on a DeSales error and came home on Holmes’ second hit.
Sophomore Dillon Brown pitched the next two innings as DeSales again tied the score with a run in the sixth. Sophomore Payton Stanford went the seventh and eighth innings, also allowing one run and he was charged with the loss as the Mountaineer offense went quiet.
Senior Charlie Stewart pitched a scoreless ninth.
Schreiner begins SCAC play this weekend with a three-game set at Texas Lutheran. Friday’s series opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Seguin.
