Schreiner Women’s Soccer got a second half goal from sophomore Ruth Blackburn off a corner kick and that - along with a strong second half effort - propelled the Mountaineers to a season-opening 1-1 tie with NAIA UH-Victoria on Tuesday afternoon.

The Jaguars got their goal in the 29th minute by Yahajaira Lara off freshman goalkeeper Taylor Roberson who tended the net in the first half for SU. Sophomore Megan Morant took her turn between the posts in the second half and recorded three saves over 65 minutes including two overtime periods while keeping UHV off the scoreboard.

The second half saw SU ratchet up the effort and control with twice as many shots at UHV. For the match, the two teams tied both in shots with nine shots each, as well as with corner kicks, five each.

Blackburn’s goal came off a corner kick that was tight to the near post in the 79th minute. The ball squirted between — and bounced off — several defenders and found the back of the net.

Blackburn had four shots on the day with sophomore Alex Gill having two shots.

The Mountaineers get another home match on Friday at 2 p.m. vs. LeTourneau in non-conference action at Mountaineer Field.
