A poll by the University of Texas and the Texas Tribune found that 66% of Texans believe climate change is happening. Only 23% say it’s not happening and the rest were undecided. Like a poll asked by the same group on immigration, the divisions of opinion are split sharply along political affiliation. The poll found that 88% of those identifying as Democrats, along with 74% identifying as independents said climate change was happening. The poll found that 44% of Republicans agreed with Democrats and independents on the issue while 42% said it was not happening. Republicans also led the way when it comes to being undecided with 14% of the GOP here saying they weren’t sure.

This is a poorly worded poll. The question should be something on the order of “do you think human activity is responsible for accelerated climate change, and this change is occurring now.” We all know earth’s climate is constantly changing…as per the glacial erratic in NYC Central Park, the great lakes….etc.

Carlos Richter

Yes, I believe that the Earth's climate has been changing for billions of years.

I seem to remember that not all that long ago you denied that the ocean temperature was rising and you cited friends of yours in fla. that did not have to raised their docks as proof the sea was not rising. is the ocean now warming and the sea now rising? what has changed between then and now to alter your opinion?

I have yet to see a honest debate on this subject where both sides present their best argument and let the people decide.

Mary Lou Shelton

you haven't seen an honest debate because you dont have an open mind and haven't really looked. the information from the vast majority of scientists is quite easy to find and I have posted links to it. but if you have a preconceived notion, then you will automatically reject the data as biased or wrong, or made up. that is the nature of people. the only honesty is the one that confirms their bias. I really like the KDT polls, but perhaps there is room for improvement in both the questions, as stated in an earlier comment, and the answers as well. Responding to a question by another question is a waste of bandwidth.

I also agree that this climate question is poorly written. The climate has always been changing. I personally think that God has more to do with the climate changing than anyone else.

Mary Lou Shelton

and why would he be doing that t? and please dont tell me that he works in mysterious ways. and which god is doing it? the god you recognize, or the gods that other religions recognize?

and I will point out that as recently as 10 years ago, most locals denied any form of climate change. now it has shifted to god is doing it, not us. doesn't any of that seem odd to you? gene

Read Genesis 8:22 "While the earth remains, seedtime & harvest, cold & heat, summer & winter, day & night shall not cease." argument settled; It's all in GOD'S Hand when the Climate changes.

Mary Lou Shelton

based on past letters and posts, science is a stranger to the most vocal locals regarding climate change. Gene

In my opinion this entire Climate Change / Global Warming issue has its roots in politics. If the conclusion is that people have some control over the climate then the government would have to step in and take control of the people that are causing the problem. Can you imagine the government intrusion in peoples lives. The Federal government would have to greatly expanded to start controlling the weather. Sounds crazy but this in my opinion what this argument is al about. Thomas Jefferson once said, "That government is best which governs least".

Mary Lou Shelton

thanks for sharing your opinion. did you actually look up anything about climate change to arrive at it? gene

Mary Lou Shelton

what you are proposing is an all too common repeated theme-there is a massive conspiracy theory to strip us of our rights. have you given thought to the fact that 10s of thousands of people would have to be in on this? and yet no one has come forward to say I was paid and I have proof that my colleagues were paid. how rational do you think that is?

google the characteristics of conspiracy theory believers. lots of interesting articles. and be aware that this is an equal opportunity disorder, affecting people from all walks of life and all political orientations.

and I believe in science. I see no incompatibility between being religious and believing in science. we were given a brain to use. gene

Gene, the Bible states in Genesis 8 vs:22, GOD says, "While the earth remains there is going to be cold & heat...& they shall not cease.." This alone settles the false narative of man made climate change? Do we really believe GOD would allow man to take control over His authority & alter our climate. Come on Gene, give GOD a little more credit than that. He alone spoke this earth into existence, & created the seasons. Not only that,.He alone will change it when He determines it is time,. because He also created time.

trose

Gene; Just because you find a dozen scientists that all agree on the same thing and they post their opinion; this is not a honest debate on a subject.

Mary Lou Shelton

come on t, a dozen? if you have looked up the data you will find the signatures of thousands of scientists. you can also find data that as far back as the 80s Exxon had internal research that showed global warming was occurring and blamed human activity for it.

what would you consider an honest debate? the data is overwhelming. gene

trose

Gene, of course the data is overwhelming when you only pick people that agree with you. I would consider a honest debate with 2 people presenting their best argument for and against human involvement in climate change / global warming. I have not seen anything that comes close to this.

Mary Lou Shelton

then you haven't watched the news very much. for years the media gave equal time to deniers even though they represent less than 3% of scientists.

so lets say you go in for an operation, and 97% of physicians have agreed that a certain procedure should be used, and 3% say another. would you want to have a physician from each opposing group come to you and explain their position so you could choose.

you truly stun me sometimes with your illogic.

and thats right t, I go to thousands of sites to arrange the name of scientists who agree with me. seriously? gene

trose

According to the Pew Research Center the increase in concern of climate change is coming manly from liberal Democrats who would prefer larger more intrusive government.

trose, You are right on. Al Gore, with a degree in fake journalism, leads the pack.
