Private graveside services were held Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Kerrville.
Benno Bauer was born August 13, 1920, in Albert, Texas, the son of Paul August and Ida Ruby Vollmar Bauer. Benno married Ruby Julia Schaper on July 12, 1942, at the Government Hill Methodist Church at Dodd Field in San Antonio, Texas. They were married almost 71 years.
Benno, at the age of 17, joined the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) and was sent to Duncan, Arizona, and later to Rodeo, New Mexico, until he was discharged April 1940. August 9, 1940, he volunteered in the U.S. Army and served until September 28, 1945, being honorably discharged as sergeant. Benno, along with two of his brothers, Lee and Roland Bauer, served in the Army during World War II.
After years of service, Benno retired from the V.A. Hospital, Kerrville, Texas. He was a hard worker, always adding on to our home or working on the yard at Lytle Street as well as building our home on Willow Way. After retirement, he loved to refinish antique furniture, garden, hunt and fish. Benno shelled hundreds of pounds of pecans from his yard utilizing his pocket knife, as he wanted to keep the pecans whole! When you left their house, or when they came to visit, you would have plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, as well as homemade cookies or pie. He loved the outdoors and was looking forward to a trip to Ruidoso, New Mexico, this fall.
