In our nation that again has just celebrated its independence in a world ruled by dictators and wannabees who kiss it up to them, the Psalmist reminds us and reaffirms who is really in charge, the One who indeed created the world inhabited by the nations in the first place.

In Psalm 47, the Creator God who rules over the nations is praised in the following words of exaltation and power:

“Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of joy.

For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, a great king over all the earth.

He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet.

He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.

For God is the king of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm.

God is king over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.

The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham.

For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted.”

Again, in the words of Psalm 67, the nations are called to worship and praise God:

“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.

Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth.

Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.

The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, has blessed us.

May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him.”

Pray that the Lord God of all nations will reveal to petty arrogant dictators who is really in charge, and let us join with God in all efforts to bring justice, truth, peace, and salvation to his and our world.
