Walking through the house, I glanced toward the kitchen and decided to grab a cup of coffee. I placed my cup under the Keurig, pressed “brew,” then turned to answer my phone. Turning back, I wondered what in the world had happened. The counter was flooded with coffee.
I quickly looked and saw my cup was in the right place, then began sopping up the mess. Wondering if my Keurig was broken, I took a closer look at the cup.
It was “sorta” in the right place, but not under the spigot.
My Keurig was fine. The placement of my cup was the problem.
ARE WE IN THE RIGHT PLACE
OR SORTA IN THE RIGHT PLACE?
As I continued to clean the counter, I realized there was a lesson far greater than one having to do with my cup placement. It was a lesson having to do with my placement before God.
In other words, we can place ourselves in church on Sunday. We can place ourselves in a midweek Bible study. We can place ourselves with our hands folded in prayer. All those are important.
But a closer look at our nearness to God is needed.
ARE WE BEING FILLED WITH
THE HOLY SPIRIT?
Just as a cup is created to be filled with liquid, the human spirit is created to be filled with God’s Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18)
Sorta being in the right place with God is different from daily opening our hearts to be filled with His Spirit.
WHY WE NEED TO BE
FILLED WITH GOD’S SPIRIT
The Bible differentiates between God’s Spirit, or nature, and our human spirit/nature.
“Now the deeds of the flesh (natural man) are evident, which are immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galatians 5:19-23.
OUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS
MORE THAN FINE
Just as my Keurig was fine, our Heavenly Father is more than fine. He is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
If these don’t characterize our spirit, then no doubt we’ll have a mess of a day, emotions, and relationships that we continually have to clean up.
THE GIFT OF BEING IN THE RIGHT
PLACE AND FILLED WITH GOD’S SPIRIT
Life is hard. We will not be perfect until heaven. Others in our lives will sin. Our world is not the perfect one our loving God created.
Rather, we live in a world God warned us about as a result of sin.
God’s gift to believers is His Holy Spirit.
Are we daily being filled?
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Spirit. Help us mindfully place ourselves under You to be continually filled. Amen.
