Presbyterian Church USA World Mission has named a new regional liaison for East Central Africa, serving Malawi, Kenya, Rwanda and Zambia — the Rev. Paula Cooper.

Cooper describes her style as one which “deliberately works toward and with a culture that values a collaboration of God’s people and their gifts for ministry.”

In assuming this crucial role, Cooper will facilitate relationships with partner churches and institutions in the four countries where the church is growing rapidly and local pastoral training and leadership are greatly needed.

The Church of Central Africa Presbyterian in Malawi and Zambia has a membership of more than 3 million, and the Presbyterian Church in East Africa has more than 4 million members. The Presbyterian Church of Rwanda also is growing rapidly and currently has 400,000 congregants across the country.

A graduate of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and having pastored several churches, Cooper has been recognized by the prestigious Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City as a Global Ministry Fellow with Theological Education in Zambia.

The thriving Presbyterian churches of East Central Africa are destined to continue their rapid growth of followers of Jesus Christ, as well as other denominations sharing ministry and support with them in Africa.

David Tritenbach is a retired Presbyterian minister.
