Dr. James Carr Stokes
GILLESPIE COUNTY — Dr. James Carr Stokes, 62, of Kerrville, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009. He was born March 24, 1947, in Del Rio, Texas, to William and Irene Carr Stokes. On June 21, 1969, he married Rebecca Dobie in Cotulla, Texas. They were going to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this year. Dr. Stokes lived his early life in Encinal, Texas, graduated high school in Cotulla, Texas, and served in the United States Air Force. He graduated from Schreiner College, University of Texas and University of Texas Dental School. He lived in Houston for 25 years, but his dream was to move to the Hill Country in 1992, where he opened his practice as a Periodontist. Dr. Stokes was President of the Heart of Texas Dental Association, founder of Young Life Adult Committee, and was a longtime supporter and on the board of The Salvation Army. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Boerne. He was a man of strong faith and a musician. He will be remembered as kind, a spiritual leader, humble, giving, very creative and as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. Survivors include his wife, Becky Stokes of Kerrville; daughter, Rebecca Stokes of Bloomington, Ind.; sons, Jim Dobie Stokes and wife, Allison, of Boerne, Texas, and Carr Stokes and wife, Becca, of Boerne, Texas; sister, Carol S. Stokes Gilbert of San Antonio, Texas; and grandchildren, Ellie and Georgia Stokes. He also is survived by his mother-in-law, Fredna Wood of Cotulla, Texas; brother-in-law, Richard Dobie and wife, Debbie; and niece, Lee Ann Gilbert Waldrip. His parents, W.B. and Irene Carr Stokes, preceded him in death. Services will be Friday, May 29, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels, officiated by Alan Taha. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, 855 Hays St., Kerrville, TX 78028.
