Tivy fight begins tonight

Published November 13, 2007

From staff reports

The Tivy Antlers lost in the bi-district round of the playoffs to the Sam Houston Hurricanes last season and it would only be the beginning of what they would lose.

Leaders TuCar Speller and Craig Rhyne departed due to graduation.

Senior Jacob Frausto injured his knee during the summer and it has yet to be seen if he will be able to take the floor for the Antlers.

And with various players such as Sal Morrison still leading the Antler football team, the squad will face San Antonio Christian tonight at 7 p.m. a little less than full strength.

But they will have second team all-district sophomore Jonathan Perry and senior Phillip Thompson.

The Antlers finished 24-10 last year after a 1-3 start in district. They bounced back to finish 6-4 in district.

Medina Bobcats

District 28-A

Head Coach: Tut Wardlaw

Last year’s record: 19-6 (7-1 in district)

In a nutshell: The team took home some hardware last season by taking their first district championship in a decade.

The team lost district MVP David Clark and Tyler Eads, but return 6- foot 6 all-district selection Cole Carpenter and all five starters are taller than six feet. The Bobcats are young and will only have one senior on the team this season.

Coach’s thoughts: “I’m hoping that with three returning lettermen they will take over the leadership role, “ Wardlaw said. “It’s hard to replace David’s 22 points per game, but with Jame Campbell and Colton Baker’s shooting, John Alvarado’s slashing ability and Carpenter and Cade Hord’s inside play we should be able to replace those points.”

Our Lady of the Hills Hawks

TAPPS-2A

Head Coach: Jeremy Thornton

Last year’s record: N/A

In a nutshell: The Hawks return five players from last season and the first-year head coach will have his hands full with such a young team.

Coach’s thoughts: “I think our system is really going to benefit with the type of athlete that we have in classification we play,” Thornton said. “This is definitely going to be a building year since it’s my first year here.”

Comfort Bobcats

District 8-2A

Head Coach: Colin Toot

Last year’s record: 20-11 (8-2 in district)

In a nutshell: After snatching a district championship, the Bobcats fell early in the playoffs on a sour note.

But this season the team brings back district MVP Antonio Blanco who also was named first-team all-South Texas last season. Along with Blanco are four other returnees who started at one time.

Coach’s thoughts: “We should be the run for a title this season,” Toot said. “We have some experience but lack size over all. I feel like we are pretty quick and team defense should be better.”

Ingram Tom

Moore Warriors

District 25-3A

Head Coach: Vance Millican

Last year’s record: 7-24 (2-7 in district)

In a nutshell: With only one player who had varsity experience, the Warriors made the playoffs last year. Returning seven players from last year’s team, the team should be stronger mentally and physically.

Coach’s thoughts: “We are excited about this year,” Millican said. “We look to improve on what we did last year and we are gunning to stay in the playoffs for another year, which would make it our seventh in a row.”

Harper Longhorns

District 28-A

Head Coach: Billy Grumbles

Last year’s record: 14-14 (2-6 in district)

In a nutshell: Winning only two games in district, the team returns to the court looking to improve on last year’s disappointment. They lost Joseph Chevalier, but return five lettermen from last season, including three year lettermen Christian Herring, who earned second team all-district honors.

Coach’s thoughts: “I think we have a decent chance at the playoffs and we have a good senior class.”Grumbles said. “It should be a fight for a spot as Medina and Johnson City return a lot of talent and Rocksprings and Center Point have some good kids with experience.”

Center Point Pirates

District 28-A

Head Coach: Charlie Syphrett

Last year’s record: 5-18 (0-10 in district)

In a nutshell: The Pirates will be fed by a fountain of youth this season after failing to log a win in district. The junior varsity took home co-district champ honors last season and will join the varsity to make a run at the playoffs.

Coach’s thoughts: “Our strength will be our youth movement,” Syphrett said. “We will work on making the playoffs and everything will be designed to try and see that outcome. Our one weakness is a lack of height.”

Fredericksburg Billies

District 27-4A

Head Coach: Tim Kaman

Last year’s record: 27-9 (9-1 in district)

In a nutshell: The team had an outstanding season last year and advanced to the regional quarterfinal, but sadly lost eight of it’s top 10 players. Senior Travis Eden will have to lead his team, back to the promise land this season. The team will have three sophomores on the team and also will have Luke Evans, who was a starter last season.

Coach’s thoughts: “We have a good nucleus coming back with Evans and Travis, so we will be okay,” Kaman said. “We will be young, but we will do a lot of praying and just get better. I think Alamo Heights and Boerne will be a cut above everybody else but we will play hard and do our best.”
