Art2heart

Art2Heart’s “America America the Beautiful” is a ballet review with a patriotic theme that pays tribute through dance to what is great about the United States.

“I am very serious about patriotism in our country,” said Lorraine LeMon, executive director of Art2heart and co-artistic director of the show. “I have had the awesome opportunity to visit and serve as a volunteer in over eight countries, and I would rather live in no other place than the United States of America.”

The one-night only performance will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Dietert Auditorium at Schreiner University, 2100 Memorial Blvd. The suggested donation is $10.

The show demonstrates the country’s greatness through examples of diversity, entertainment and freedom, LeMon said in an e-mail.

“Our diversity — the diverse cultures and backgrounds that all pour into the melting pot of the (United States), and how each one adds flavor and substance to the whole,” LeMon said. “Our entertainment — no one country is imitated (more) than we are, our celebrities, our dances, our music and our styles. Our freedom — we know it is only by God’s grace and the sacrifice of our soldiers and veterans that allow us this precious gift of freedom.”

Falling under each category is a handful of songs. To exemplify ethnic diversity, performers will sing and dance to “America the Beautiful,” “Carmen Suite,” “America” from “West Side Story,” “Slovonic Dance” and “Wade in the Water.”

For Entertainment History, performers will perform a collection of songs from “Grease,” “The Boxer and the Ballerina,” “Red Carpet,” “Pirates” and a collection of songs by Michael Jackson. For the segment demonstrating “pride in our country,” performers will sing a collection of military marches, “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “Big Band” and “Freedom Song.”

This show marks Art2heart’s first collaboration with Alamo Ballet Arts Theater, a San Antonio nonprofit ballet company. The performance is a fundraiser for both 501c3 organizations.

“They (Alamo Ballet Arts Theater) add and bring to the table of this performance, classical ballet in its beauty and years of experience of composing and producing dance presentations,” LeMon said.

The show will begin with a narrator, Juan Carlos, and then fade into “America the Beautiful” being sung by Breanna Varna, a student at Center Point Middle School, and a chorus of Art2heart students.

“Besides having a good time, the viewers will get a huge picture of the greatness of our country through the different dance pieces presented,” LeMon said. “They will also get a chance to be a supporter of both nonprofits, because this is a fundraising event as well. They will be a support to the children. Just by showing up, we know that they care.”

Sharing the mission to “never forget that I was born for this specific time in history to do something great and I already have the gifts and the passion to complete my purpose in life” gives the work to put the show on worth the effort, LeMon said.

“I live by the motto ‘you ain’t living, if you ain’t giving,’” she said. “It is even twice as important for me to establish those kinds of principles in our children.”
