ITM surprised with late Texans burst

Published January 19, 2008

INGRAM — After the first half of Ingram Tom Moore’s game against Wimberley Friday night, it appeared the Warriors were going to cruise to their third straight victory in District 25-3A.

Unfortunately, appearances can be deceiving.

The Texans exploded in the third quarter, outscoring ITM 21-8 on their way to a 50-38 victory. The outcome left both teams tied for first place in the district with identical 2-1 league marks. ITM is now 12-11 overall and Wimberley improved 13-10.

Caleb Warren was the lone Warrior in double figures with 10 points. Sean McDonald lead the Texans with

15 and Justin Weldon added 12.

Both teams’ shooting performance in the first quarter matched the frigid weather outside. ITM scored first when Price Maxwell buried a 3-pointer from the corner. Neither team could get its offense going and the score was tied 4-4 with time running out in period. However, as has become his custom, Warren buried a 30-footer at the buzzer to give the Warriors a 7-4 lead.

For an encore, Warren buried a 35-footer with time expiring in the second quarter to give ITM a 20-14 lead at the intermission. Warren finished the half with nine points and the Warriors seemed to have the game in hand.

However, McDonald and Weldon came out in the third quarter and ignited the Texans. After Taylor Riley hit a free throw to put ITM ahead 21-14, McDonald put back an offensive rebound and then converted a free throw to cut the Warriors’ lead to four.

Wimberley’s Corey Collier nailed a 3-pointer to pull the Texans to within one, 21-20. The teams then traded the lead several times. Matt Campos gave ITM its last lead of the night when he hit a 15-footer with 3:15 left in the third to put the Warriors up 28-27.

Wimberley then went on a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. Weldon and Riley Engemoen each had a pair of put backs off the offensive glass during that stretch.

Defensively, the Texans held Warren to only one point in the second half.

To compound matters, ITM shot a woeful 11-for-26 from the line for the game.

“Our energy level in the first and second halves was like night and day,” said Warrior coach Vance Millican. “When you don’t hit your free throws, don’t block out and allow all those second chance points, it is hard to win.”

ITM returns to action Tuesday night when it travels to Bandera to play the Bulldogs.
