Aspiring actors get professional training
Published June 25, 2009
Playhouse 2000 will host an acting workshop with professional actor and teacher Kyle Andrews titled “Acting for Everybody.” The workshop is open to the public and will be at 10 a.m., Saturday July 11, at the Playhouse building next to the Cailloux Theater at 910 Main st. Anyone interested in the idea of performing on stage is invited to attend the class free of charge. Playhouse Academy students are required to attend. The Playhouse Academy, a theatrical education program housed at the Cailloux Theater, is now in its second year. One aspect of this program is the role of the guest educator, also in its second year. The guest educator program exposes academy students to theater professionals from outside the Kerrville area. Playhouse 2000 directors said the academy enjoyed a very successful relationship with the 2008 guest educator Austin Owen, who worked with the Academy students and Playhouse 2000 volunteers during the rehearsals and performances of “Singin’ in the Rain.” Now, the Playhouse directors said they look forward to the same success this year. Andrews, a professional actor and teacher and San Antonio native, is no stranger to the Hill Country theater community. First introduced to Kerrville during Playhouse 2000’s production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” he went on to be the director of theater at the Hill Country Arts Foundation for two seasons before his love of teaching pulled him back o San Antonio. Andrews got his start at Texas State University as an acting student then moved to Chicago, where he performed professionally for several years. After joining a Chicago troupe that specialized in children’s theater, he returned to San Antonio in 2001 with his wife, Karen, to start his own educational theater company — ACT, the Artistic Children’s Theate. The company toured San Antonio schools with high-energy, two-man adaptations of classic stories such as “Around the World in 80 Days,” “Tom Sawyer” and “Treasure Island.” While working with longtime friend and Playhouse designer Jeff Cunningham on the touring sets and properties of an ACT show, Andrews was encouraged to audition for Perchik, the radical student leader from “Fiddler on the Roof.” During the run of that show, Andrews interviewed for the job of director of the Point Theatre. While at the Point, he worked on many critically-praised shows, including “Camelot” and “Inspecting Carol.” However, it was the two shows from the “Chronicles of Narnia” stories that changed Andrews’ life. He The productions included dozens of child actors. It was while working with and teaching them that Andrews realized his true calling of sharing theater with young people. He soon accepted the position as theater teacher at the Universal City Baptist Academy, and last year, became one of two drama teachers at the new Brandeis High School in San Antonio’s Northside Independent School District. With Andrews’ help, Brandeis became one of the only public schools in Texas to advance to the UIL One Act Play Regional Competition the very first year the school was open. Now, Andrews has been invited back by Playhouse 2000 to be the 2009 academy guest educator during the rehearsals and performances of the summer musical “1776.” Andrews already has started working one-on-one with Academy students, honing their performance and audition material. Anyone interested in the workshop should call the box office to sign up in advance. Participants should bring writing material, bottled water and dress in comfortable clothes that move and stretch. No skirts, dresses or flip-flop shoes should be worn. For information regarding or to get tickets to see Kyle Andrews as President John Adams in “1776,” call the Cailloux Theater box office at 896-9393, ext. 223.
