Hawks shine in first game under the lights
Published August 29, 2009
Our Lady of the Hills opened the program’s fourth season of six-man football with the first home game under the lights, but the Hawks quickly turned them off on Tribe Consolidated, winning 61-20.
“It was totally different, totally awesome,” senior quarterback Scott Neuburger said of his first night game.
Neuberger led the offense to a touchdown in each drive he quarterbacked, throwing for 153 yards and two touchdown passes, while rushing for 67 yards.
“Scott stepped up where we needed him to,” coach Rush Cone said. “He executed as well as I’ve seen him since we started a month ago. That helped us a great deal and put a lot of confidence into the offense.”
After scoring off a 14-yard run and throwing for a touchdown pass, Neuberger suffered a shoulder stinger. With his team up 32-6 after one quarter, OLH rested him. Neuberger returned for several drives in the second half.
“I’m OK,” Neuberger said. “It was good to come back and finish this game out.”
The Hawks opened the game by scoring a touchdown within seconds. Neuberger connected with sophomore Marshall Walker for a 14-yard pass.
After a Tribe score, the game was 8-6 when Neuberger ran for a score. Neuberger then had an interception on defense, which set up senior running back J.D. Salinas’ 62-yard touchdown run. Salinas added an interception on defense on the following drive. He finihed the game with just two rushes, but had 83 yards and two touchdowns.
With Neuberger out, sophomore Nic Mosser threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to Walker in the second quarter.
Cone was as shocked as the fans were at the 32-12 half time score.
“Since I hadn’t seen any tape on these guys, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. And when you watch them line up, they got some kids that were (6-foot-3-inches), so I was anticipating a game that was going to be a little stiffer contest than it turned out to be.
“I don’t think I was ‘laying it on’ on that stand point, other than I was surprised as you might have been that we were so successful running outside that early.”
The defense, much like 2008, played well throughout the game. Neuberger and Salinas each had an interception, while Walker added two of his own. The stat book may show solid play in the secondary, but the Tribe missed three opportunities to score on long passes that went through a wide-open receiver’s arms.
“The (first team defense) did fine,” Rush Cone said. “We had some blown coverages early that allowed not a score, but a deep pass that was somewhat embarrassing to J.D. (Salinas) — but that was corrected easily.”
While the defense forced turnovers and held a prolific passing offense to just 20 points, Neuberger and his coaches were impressed by the Hawks’ offense.
“We were able to execute out of the spread, which was kind of an area of concern this past week, because we didn’t get a lot of work in,” Neuberger said. “But we were able to execute, and we did very well.”
