Rita Kenney Currier
KERRVILLE — Rita Kenney Currier, age 84, passed away on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009. She was preceded in death 31 years ago by her beloved husband, George.
She was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1924, in Boston, Mass. She was such a tiny baby that her parents did not give her a middle name, saying that she was too small to carry more than just a first and last name. Her father fondly called her “Rio”. She was the 10th of 11 children of John Joseph Kenney and Katherine Doyle Kenney.
She married George Andrew Currier on Nov. 1, 1947. They traveled with his Army career and raised their children together, settling in Kerrville in 1962. Rita and George lived in many places all over the United States and in Europe and continued to travel after retirement from the Army.
When she was young, Rita worked as a model in Boston and worked for Max Factor Cosmetics. In Kerrville, she was proud to be the first Kindergarten teacher at Notre Dame Catholic School and taught there for three years. She is still remembered fondly by her students. She was active in the Girl Scouts and past-president of the Host Lioness Club of Kerrville.
Rita’s family was her greatest accomplishment. Her joy was in being known as a mother and as Grandma Rita to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was surrounded by many of her five children, 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren as she left this earth for her heavenly home. She was anticipating the arrival of two more great-grandchildren within the year.
Rita is survived by her daughter, Joan Currier, of Portland, Ore.; daughter, Lois Masters and husband, Kenneth, of San Marcos; daughter, Denise Porter, and husband, Travis, of Center Point; son, Paul Currier, and wife, Rosanna, of Okinawa, Japan, and daughter, Karen Mosty, and husband, Robert, of Kerrville.
Lois and Kenneth’s children and grand-children are Ken and Soraya Masters and daughter, Izadora, of Tomball; Jeff and Tracey Masters and daughter, Alyssa, of Canyon Lake, and Kena and husband, Nickolas Barrera, and daughter, Haydn, of San Marcos.
Denise and Travis’ children and grand-children are Russell and Catherine Porter of Midland; Samantha Harlan and children, Preston and Taytem Harlan, of Boerne; Elizabeth Sailer and husband, Ken, and sons, Mitchell and Nicholas, of Columbia, S.C.; Travis and fiancé, Linzee Prill, of Bridgeport; Kristin O’Neall and husband, Kelly, of Burnet; William Porter and fiancée, Rachel Stubbs, US Navy, Sasebo, Japan; Kathryn Milam and husband, Clint, and son, Colton, of Granite Shoals; and son, Noel, of Center Point.
Paul and Rosanna’s children are son Andrew and wife, Noelle, of Fort Hood, Killeen, and son, Paul Joseph, of Okinawa, Japan. Andrew and Noelle are expecting Matthew Andrew Currier at any moment.
Karen and Robert’s children are Kevin Mosty and girlfriend, Casey, Thibodeaux; Kellyn Mosty and fiancé, Jeremy Lizenbee.
Jeff Zalaznik of Chandler, Ariz. was a longtime dear friend of Rita’s, and considered her a mother. Dianne Albrecht of Kerrville was also one of Rita’s dear friends
