William Otis Redus
KERRVILLE — William Otis Redus died July 13, 2009, at the age of 85. Born in Devine, Texas, on Aug. 31, 1923, to John Clement Redus and Hazel Ann Slater, he was one of 14 children. His parents, nine siblings, and his wife, Betty Wuneburger Redus, to whom he was married for 56 years, preceded him in death. Known to friends simply as Bill, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Buentello and her husband, Larry, of San Antonio, and a son, Glenn Redus and his wife, Mary, of Byram Township, N.J., along with grandchildren Julie Beck Stubbs, Leah Redus Cleary, Bryan Beck, Rebekah Redus Ray and Aaron Redus. Three great-grandchildren are Meghan Stubbs, Jareth Stubbs and Daniel Cleary. In addition, he is survived by brothers George Redus, Clifford Redus and Allen Ray Redus, and a sister, Mildred Brooks. Bill and Betty raised their family in San Antonio, where Bill worked in civil service at Kelly Air Force Base. In 1997, they moved to Kerrville, which became their home base while pursuing their passion for travel. They pulled a trailer home all over the United States and Canada. Bill was proud of his travels, with Alaska being the only state he never visited. Bill’s other passion was football, and he loved the Devine Warhorses, The University of Texas Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys. Visitors to the Redus home soon learned what his family already knew: Football was serious business, and was to be watched in total silence. Displays of emotion or cheering were frowned upon, as the noise broke his concentration for the next play. Even the television announcers were muted, as season after season Bill silently willed his teams to victory. But, mostly, Bill will be remembered for his nonstop sense of humor and gregarious nature. There were no strangers when Bill was around, and he always was joking and lending a hand to those in need. Even in his 80s, Bill still was clambering onto his friends’ rooftops to help string Christmas lights, and his lawnmower often was heard at the crack of dawn as he cut grass all over the neighborhood, not understanding why anyone would want to waste daylight. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 17, at First United Methodist Church in Kerrville, with interment at 2:30 p.m. at San Jose Burial Park, 8235 Mission Road in San Antonio. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Peterson Hospice in Kerrville, Texas.
