Barasingha takes jaunt in easter Kerr County
Published October 13, 2009
An exotic deer, known as a barasingha, was taken into custody by Kerr County authorities on the morning of Oct. 6 after it was found wandering along a roadway in the vicinity of FM 480 and Texas 173.
The animal, which is considered livestock, is being held for 18 days to allow its owner time to claim it.
If someone comes forward to reclaim the deer, he or she most likely will have to reimburse the county for expenses associated with hauling and boarding the animal, which is being cared for at a holding facility.
If no one claims it by the deadline, the deer will be sent to auction.
Although such issues seldom occur, they do happen.
Typically, red deer and elk are the animals that tend to escape, and the owners come forward to reclaim them, according the Animal Control Director Janie Whitt.
This instance marks the first time in 14 years the county actually has had to impound an exotic deer.
While barasingha are not on the county’s list of “dangerous wild animals,” Whitt said someone could have been injured if the deer, which was darting on and off the roadway, had caused a traffic accident.
She said the situation should serve as a reminder to owners about the importance of checking fences to ensure their livestock is properly confined.
Ironically, this is the second issue in recent weeks involving a
barasingha.
A man died from injuries he received while reportedly trying to unload one of the animals from a trailer at the Y.O. Ranch in Mountain Home.
