Walters out at Tom Moore, in at Center Point

Published July 11, 2009

After more than a decade at Ingram Tom Moore, head baseball coach and former athletic director Bubba Walters has resigned to take over the baseball program at Center Point.

“After 13 years in one spot, it was kind of a time for change,” Walters said. “I wish Ingram nothing but the best, and I appreciate everything they’ve down for me and my family.”

Walters was selected for the position by new Center Point Athletic Director, Danny Langbein, who spent three years with Walters at ITM between 2005 and 2008.

“Danny asked me (about the position) and I felt I could make a difference over there,” Walters said. “So it’s a new challenge for me — helping them with that program over there.”

Langbein’s first move as athletic director was to find a baseball coach. Center Point’s previous skipper, Scott Mitchell, resigned to become a varsity assistant baseball coach at Tivy, as well as handle head coaching duties at the junior high level.

For Langbein, hoping to bolster his boys sports staff, the chance to bring in a coach like Walters was a no-brainer.

“Bubba is highly involved in baseball and a very, very good baseball coach,” Langbein said. “I consider him the best one around here.”

The move made sense in a lot of ways for Walters, whose children have helped make the decision even easier.

“These past couple years, my kids have had an opportunity to play (sports) with these Center Point kids and they kind of hit it off,” Walters said. “I wouldn’t have done it if they didn’t want me to, because after so long in the same spot, they’ve grown accustomed to this place.”

His children weren’t the only ones who felt a strong attachment to Ingram, as Walters credits Tom Moore for being the first school to take a chance on him as a head baseball coach.

“I appreciate everything Ingram has done for me over the years,” he said. “The parents and kids have always been really good to me. The kids that are seniors this year were in kindergarten when I got there — I’ve literally watched them grow up. Leaving them is going to be the hardest part.”

Walters, a football coach at ITM between 2006 and 2007, will also serve as the Pirates’ offensive coordinator this fall, where he will be reunited with former Tom Moore coaches Josh Stacey, Ryan Balser and Langbein.

“I’m extremely excited about football — just getting over there, working with the kids and getting things organized,” Walters said. “The four of us (coaches) have always worked well together. We know each other’s personalities — good points and bad points — so it’s going to be fun and exciting.”

Walters, who will teach high school physical education and junior high electives, said his new role will take some getting used to after spending the majority of his teaching and coaching career at ITM.

“It’s kind of weird,” Walters said. “Thirteen years in one place, so I’m a little nervous and a little excited. But overall, I’m just extremely thrilled for the opportunity.”
