Published June 23, 2009
The Kerrville Daily Times picked up two awards at the Texas Press Association’s 130th annual convention in Austin on Saturday.
The Times, competing against other dailies with 7,000 to 99,999 circuation receive two second place honors — Routine Special Section and Feature Story.
For the Routine Special Section, the Times submitted its 2008 “Healthy Life” sections, which judges noted, “Great local stories and content. Easy to read. Lots of good information so readers might hang onto it longer.”
Also placing in the Routine Special Sections category were first place, Fort Bend Herald, Rosenberg for its “Profile 2008”; third place, The Facts, Clute for its “Citizen of the Year”; and third, The Galveston County Daily News for “Coast”.
In the Feature Story category, the Times submitted two stories for its entry. For the first, “Hat-tastic: Custom hat maker visits Ingram to collect measurements,” by Thomas Phillips, judges commented “A clever head and competent layout complement this appealing story about the gone art of hat-making. An enjoyable read.”
For the second story, “Hearing restored: Cochlear implant brings sound back to woman’s life after 30 year absence,” by Alyson Chapman, judges said, “This story benefits from an inventive lead and, like subject 1, from a layout and art that attract readers. The approach is simple, no gimmicks. Good job!”
