Center Point ISD earns perfect score

Published October 30, 2009

Administrators at Center Point Independent School District boasted of the district’s perfect score on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas at its monthly board of trustees meeting Wednesday night.

CPISD received the maximum score of 85 points from the Texas Education Agency on its FIRST evaluation and annual review of financial management for all Texas public school districts. The perfect score earned the district a superior achievement rating from the state.

“This is significant for our district,” said Superintendent Cody Newcomb at the meeting. “There are a number of other districts in the area that earned superior achievement. But earning a perfect score is even more rare.”

Kerrville and Ingram independent school districts both garnered superior ratings, but only CPISD earned a perfect score.

The score rates financial management by the school during the 2007-08 school year and are based on 24 different criteria. FIRST scores have been issued to all Texas school districts since 1999. The goal of the rating system is to promote quality management of school districts’ financial resources.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, board members heard a presentation from Bo Ledoux, of Claycomb Associates Architects, an Texas-based architectural firm specializing in school building projects.

CPISD has no official plans for renovations or new construction projects for any of its campuses, but Newcomb said the school is looking at architectural firms to act as consultants for the district.

“We don’t have any plans as of yet,” he said. “But certainly there is a need for improvements to all our campuses, and what we are looking to do is bring in a firm that can act as a consultant. To help us prioritize and put a dollar figure on things.”

During his presentation to the board, LeDoux showed many examples of his firm’s work on other Texas schools and said his company has a 90 percent success rate in passing bond issues in districts.

No action was taken during the meeting in regards to hiring the firm, but Newcomb expressed his confidence, saying they are, “our kind of people.”
