Fire in Dallas blamed for Sunday Internet out
Published November 24, 2009
A short-circuit and fire in Dallas is being blamed for a broadband outage Sunday night that left 7,314 Windstream customers in Kerrville and the surrounding Hill Country without Internet access for about 12 hours.
Glenn Summers, division vice president for Windstream, a telecommunications company providing Internet and telephone service, said the problem was with equipment for Time Warner Telecom.
In order to provide broadband service to Kerrville, Windstream uses data transport lines operated by Time Warner Telecom that connect to a central hub in Dallas.
Summers said he was informed by Time Warner Telecom that a short-circuit in the Time Warner Telecom equipment caused a “localized fire,” which caused an outage from around 3:50 p.m. Sunday until 4:10 a.m. Monday. The outage affected customers from Kerrville to the Harper area
Time Warner Telecom is a separate company from Time Warner Cable. Time Warner Cable costomers did not expereince any broadband outages Sunday.
Phone calls to Time Warner Telecom were not immediatly returned Monday.
“This is a very rare occurrence to lose all broadband access for that size area for that long,” Summers said, noting that Windstream phone service was not affected by the fire.
Larry White, a spokesman for Windstream, said the repairs took longer because of the fire.
“You had the equipment damaged, then there is time to bring in, install and test the new equipment,” White said.
White explained that it is a common practice for telecommunication companies to use each others’ lines to transmit data.
The outage affected a number of local business including the Kerrville Daily Times and Schreiner University.
“I was actually in the library working on a paper when the Internet just went down,” said Audrey Kemp, a student at Schreiner. “I just totally freaked out cause there was no way for me to get online or do research. I’m kind of lost without Internet.”
