Tivy’s Lidiak notches 8th place at state meet
Published June 6, 2009
In her first trip to the Class 4A state track and field meet, and the first for any Lady Antler in three years, sophomore Connie Lidiak came away with an eighth-place finish in the 3,200-meter run on Friday at Myers Stadium in Austin.
Lidiak’s time of 12:01.65 was well off her school record mark of 11:33 in the two-mile run, which may be attributed to some nerves for the state meet newcomer.
“I think [nerves were] definitely at least a factor,” Tivy girls track coach Kevin Pope said. “That’s normal for a kid her age. Nerves are going to be a part of it.”
Lidiak is one of just four Lady Antlers to advance to the state meet in six years, which alone has made the season a successful one.
“The biggest thing is that it’s quite an accomplishment just to get here in the first place,” Pope said. “Only eight kids in the entire state of Texas get to run in any given event at the state meet, so she’s already accomplished a lot just by qualifying.”
First place went to sophomore Carly Kitts of Midlothian High School, who finished with a time of 10:52.23, more than 15 seconds better than second-place finisher Maggie Escobar, a freshman from Fort Worth Boswell.
Edging out Lidiak at the Region IV qualifying, Melissa Jones of Boerne Sam Champion finished seventh at the state meet with a time 11:37.
Within hours of the run’s completion, Pope and Lidiak set a goal for next year.
“Now that she’s been here and knows what to expect in terms of the level of competition, the goal next time is to get here and medal,” Pope said. “We talked about it right about after the race, and she knows now what to expect.”
