Air Evac Lifeteam officially moved into its new home at the Kerrville Municipal/Louis Schreiner Field Airport Thursday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and walkthrough of their new facility — a move that allows more convenience for the flight crews and maintenance personnel.
“We are very excited and thrilled to be here,” said Nick Clark, program director for Kerrville Air Evac. “We’ve been in the community for four and a half years, and this shows our dedication to Kerrville and the surrounding areas.”
The local flight group consists of four pilots and six medical crew members. They average one flight a day from locations around the area, including Kerrville, Mason, Junction, Bandera, Rocksprings and most of Edwards County. The majority of their flights are to San Antonio.
“This base at the airport is much more convenient (than the old base on top of the parking garage in downtown Kerrville),” Clark said. “We have 24/7 access to fuel, a hangar for inclement weather and a full-time mechanic always on staff out here. And we disturb the public less for our late night flights.”
The flight nurses work shifts of 24-hours-on, 24-hours-off. The new building includes sleeping quarters and a kitchen so the crews can relax in their downtime.
“It’s an advantage for them to be out here at the airport,” said Bruce McKenzie, airport manager. “It’s a one-stop convenient stop for them and we are happy to have them.”
Air Evac Lifeteam is a membership-based organization that provides 24/7 emergency flight coverage to trauma victims.
