Senior send off
Published October 21, 2009
It would be wrong to say the Tivy volleyball team took a “good” loss Tuesday against Boerne Sam Champion — players and coaches know there’s no such thing.
But as losses go, the young squad’s three-set defeat at Antler Gymnasium was as encouraging as they come.
“I’m proud of them,” coach Monica Meyers said following her team’s 25-12, 25-18 and 25-14 loss. “They’re doing a lot of good things — there’s a lot of positive. As a coach, you can’t ask for anything more.”
Tivy (8-26, 0-10 District 27-4A) lost 25-12, 25-12 and 25-9 in its last meeting with Champion, but showed promise in all three sets Tuesday. While the Lady Chargers were able to pull away late each time, they had to fight for it.
“We rallied pretty good tonight, and last time we played them we didn’t really rally at all,” senior Ally Stone said. “Coach told us where we needed to hit, and we got that. I’m sure the team sees (the improvement).”
It was senior night for Stone, the team’s lone spring graduate. Soaking in the “weird” experience of her last home match, the first-year varsity player said she has enjoyed her role on the young team.
“It’s been an experience,” Stone said. “I’ve had to figure things out while working together with (the younger players) instead of doing my own thing. It’s been fun though, that’s for sure.”
While Meyers probably wishes she could have had a few more seniors saying farewell to the home crowd, she certainly was thankful for the one she had.
“She works hard, she’s got a great attitude and she’s come out here and helped provide us a nice energy,” Meyers said. “She’s a lot of fun to coach, and I see a lot of success for her in the future.”
Casey Cody led the team with 11 digs, six assists and three aces. Fellow sophomore Acacia Stuckey registered seven kills while junior Kristyn Botkin had eight assists.
“We put up some nice numbers against them,” Meyers said. “They’re competitors, and so the loss hurts. Period. That’s the way we operate. Nobody likes losing.”
The Lady Antlers will play at Cibolo Steele on Friday.
Our Lady of the Hills opens playoffs with win
The Our Lady of Hills volleyball team opened its bi-district playoff tournament with a five-set win over Rainbow Hill 23-25, 28-26, 25-22, 22-25 and 15-9 Tuesday in San Antonio.
“They really pulled it together in the fifth game,” OLH coach Rebekah Sonnenberg said. “They really played their best in that fifth game.”
Emma Parma led the Lady Hawks with 19 assists, while Kaitlin Kelley finished with 14 kills.
Sydney Coldwell recorded 14 digs and led the team with one ace.
The Lady Hawks advance to the next level, where they will face Bracken on the road. Sonnenberg said her team, which has been hit hard with illness and injuries over the past two weeks, needs to feed off the first round win on Saturday.
“Definitely hoping we can carry the momentum over and then some on Saturday,” she said.
Comfort defeats San Antonio Cole
The Comfort volleyball team (12-23, 5-5 District 27-2A) defeated San Antonio Cole (2-20, 0-11) in three sets on the road Tuesday, 25-14, 25-11 and 25-20.
Leading the way for the Deer was Aubrie Pankratz, who finished with 14 assists. Pankratz has 147 assists in the month of October, including a match of 39 assists and two with 27 assists.
Ricki Jean Myers led the Deer with 11 kills and finished with seven digs, while Becca Gaines added seven assists.
The Deer face San Antonio Brooks at home on Friday.
