Art Parts joins the list of shops to close

Published March 8, 2008

Another downtown Kerrville merchant has gone out of business.

Art Parts, at 233 Earl Garret Street, stopped sales on Feb. 29.

Owner Joyce Spence sold art supplies and custom framing at the location for nearly 20 years.

“This is my second, 20-year career, and enough is enough,” she said.

Spence taught art at Tivy High School for about 15 years. She became interested in the art store while shopping there in her capacity as an art teacher.

“It was just sort of a natural segue into another field of art, after my teaching career,” Spence said.

Business at Art Parts had started to “go downhill,” Spencer said, with the advent of “catalogs and the Internet. The framing is what kept it alive,” she said.

Art Parts shared a space with the Vitamin Emporium, which Spencer helped start in the mid-90s. The vitamin store continues to operate under new ownership.

Spencer plans to work part-time as a framer at River’s Edge Gallery, 832 Water Street.
