Hawks cruise in home opener
Published March 10, 2009
The Our Lady of the Hills baseball team wasn’t sure what to expect in its home opener on Monday, and it didn’t take long for the club to find out.
The Hawks (4-3) opened up a 10-0 lead after two innings, starter Leo Salinas was allowed to rest his arm, and the Hawks rolled over Cedar Park Summit Christian Academy in five innings.
“We didn’t know much about them and we couldn’t take them lightly — and we didn’t,” OLH coach Tom White said.
Once the Hawks realized they had their opponent overmatched, White inserted Tim Hofmann to close out the win, saving another arm that will prove valuable when district play starts Friday.
“I wanted to save some of my pitching today, and we did,” White said. “... Now we’re going to have some fresh arms for once going into an important game this year.”
Salinas, who earned the win, struck out three and allowed one hit in his two innings of work.
Hofmann continued where Salinas left off, striking out one and not allowing a baserunner past first.
Hofmann’s performance in relief was a victory within a victory for the Hawks, whose sore arms will now be allowed a full week of rest.
Friday’s home game will kick off district play for OLH, as the team looks to get off to a good start against San Antonio Lutheran.
“We did exactly what we needed to do today,” White said. “We’re going to be looking good going into Friday’s game. We should have three of four fresh arms and that’s just what I wanted.”
The Hawks batted through the lineup in the first two innings, drawing seven walks and scoring six times on passed balls. OLH had only two hits in the run-rule win, but the team didn’t need them as the Summit mistakes mounted.
“You’ve got to take it when you can get it, and they gave them to us so we’ll take it,” White said.
