Variety of events planned for Veteran's Day
Published November 10, 2009
When Veteran’s Day first began, it was in recognition of a single war.
Originally known as Armistice Day, the holiday commemorated the end of World War I with the signing of an armistice treaty on Nov. 11, 1918.
But the name has since been changed to recognized the sacrifice and commitment of all U.S. service men and women.
“We owe a great debt to everyone who’s ever served,” said Robin Gutierrez, administrative officer at the Kerrville Division of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System.
A number of events honoring veterans already took place over the weekend, including the annual classic car show at the VA hospital Saturday and the VFW’s annual gala ball Saturday night marking the anniversary of the Marines, but there still are more events planned for Wednesday.

Bugler Paul Alford and soprano soloist Sonja Johnson of the Kerrville First United Methodist Church, pianist Verna Benham of the First Presbyterian Church of Kerrville and Principal Symphony of the Hills Trumpeter George Eychner will provide the music.
The Rev. Raymond Tear, a Vietnam veteran and pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Ingram, will be the chaplain, and members of the Greystone Academy, the military academies preparatory program at Schreiner University, will serve as ushers. All veterans are asked to attend and be recognized.

Middle School
Tribute to Veterans
When: 9 to 11 a.m., Wednesday
Where: Hal Peterson Middle School
Info: For the past few years, the HPMS Student Council has prepared a patriotic buffet of sandwiches, chips and dip, cakes, cookies and beverages, as a way of honoring all veterans and to thank them for their service and sacrifice to our country. Local veterans are invited to attend and to bring a spouse or family member to join them.
The come-and-go reception offers veterans the chance to visit with the students and to share their experiences and stories. All veterans wishing to attend simply need to stop in the front office for a visitor’s pass, and student council representatives will escort them to the designated classroom reserved for the celebration.
