Plane crash victim described as 'great' grand
Published November 10, 2009
Kerrville resident Carlos McKinney, 60, and his two grandsons, Dylan Lord, 13, and Brandon Lord, 12, of Pearland died in a plane crash Sunday morning.
McKinney was piloting the Beechcraft Bonanza BE36 that took off from Kerrville Municipal/Louis Schreiner Field Airport at approximately 11:10 a.m. heading for Pearland Regional Airport.
The plane went down near Bulverde, in Comal County, approximately 45 miles southeast of Kerrville.
The plane was registered to Gold Cup Pawn Shop of Kerrville, which McKinney owned, along with two other pawn shops and several financial firms.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, and all theories of what caused the crash are highly speculative at this point. Investigations into the cause of the crash take between nine and 12 months to complete.
The airplane was flying at 9,000 feet when air traffic control lost contact and was traveling through an area with thunderstorm activity at the time it lost contact with air traffic control, although it is not known if this contributed to the crash.
McKinney was flying his grandsons back to Pearland after a weekend visit.
“He was just an all-around great guy,” said Wayne Pierce, manager of Gold Cup Pawn Shop. “He was the kids step-grandfather, but they treated him as granddad, and he loved them. He flew them back and forth a lot.”
