Antlers forging ahead

Published January 19, 2008

FREDERICKSBURG — The key, in the end, was making sure that the Tivy girls basketball team didn’t spend so much time worrying about the past that it forget to prepare for the future.

Not a problem anymore.

“(Assistant coach Jessica Ellis) and I kept telling them, ‘This is all just practice for when it counts,’” Antlers coach Christy Dill said. “The girls have did a great job of not having a pity party and letting down. They kept working hard and believing in the system and it’s starting to pay off.”

In convincing fashion, if Tivy’s 55-34 win Friday at Fredericksburg is any indication.

With their fourth straight victory, the Antlers improved to 9-15 overall and 4-1 at the halfway point in the District 27-4A schedule. The Billies fell to 10-13 and 3-2 in the district.

Tivy took care of Fredericksburg on the defensive end, holding the Billies to just seven rebounds in the game.

“The girls are playing really hard on the defensive end and they did a great job of blocking out and controlling the boards,” Dill said. “Our trap was working tonight. Kagney Kordzik did a great job on the point in that. She played her tail off — it might have been her best game of the year.”

Kordzik, a sophomore, finished with 10 points. Kaitlyn Overby led the Antlers with 13 and Haley McPhail finished

with 11.

McPhail, a sophomore, helped Tivy get off to a fast start, scoring three quick baskets as the Antlers bolted to a 32-14 lead in the first half. Tivy finished the night 23-for-50 from the field, and could have increased their advantage, except for a 8-for-22 night from the free-throw line.

“We did a good job of creating turnovers in the open court and then finishing the chances we got,” Dill said. “Haley went up strong inside and worked real hard to get good position.”

The key now, Dill said, is to continue to take steps forward.

“Tonight, we played a really good game — probably our best all year,” she said. “But I hope that we haven’t peaked, that we’ll continue to build on what we’ve done. There’s always room for improvement.”

The Antlers host Boerne on Tuesday — a rematch of their district opener, which the district-leading Greyhounds won 43-31. But, Dill said, she can see a noticeable difference in her team from that night, when Tivy struggled with

9-for-30 shooting.

“I can see a difference,” she said. “They’re confident, but I can’t say that they’re over-confident. Things are going a little easier on offense, and you can see they feel better about what they’re doing.

“We’ve done what we needed to do to prepare for next week. Now, we’ve got to keep working hard and continue to believe in what we’re doing and keep moving forward.”
