KERRVILLE — Laura E. Barnes, at the of 83, was called home to be with her Lord on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at her home in Kerrville. She was born on Nov. 9, 1926, in Anthony, Kan., to Robert and Alice Salsberry of Waldron, Kan. Laura attended grade school and high school in Harper County, Kan. She graduated from high school with honors in 1944, then attended Friends University in the summer of 1944 on a scholarship and taught school that fall in a rural Harper County Kansas school. Laura attended Friends University again in the summer of 1945 and taught school that winter in Attica, Kan. In the fall of 1946, she enrolled at Northwestern University at Alva, Okla. She met Forrest at Alva and they were married in 1947. For the next few years, they taught school in the winter and went to school in the summers. In 1951, they decided to go to school full-time to get their degrees. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in December 1951. Their daughter, Roberta, was born two months after she graduated. They moved to Wichita, Kan,, in 1952 when Forrest went to work for the U.S. Postal System. After their three children were born, she began teaching school again and taught in Sedgwick County and Wichita Public Schools until 1987, when she retired after 35 years in the teaching profession. She finished her Master of Arts degree from Wichita State University in 1962. They enjoyed RVing and spent summers in Colorado and the winters in south Texas after retiring. She especially loved fishing in Colorado. In 1990, they sold their home in Wichita and lived in an RV for a couple of years before settling in Rio Robles Mobile Home Park, where they lived from 1991 to the present. Laura was saved by her profession of faith in Jesus’ death on the cross for the forgiveness of her sins and the belief that He is the Son of God when she was in the sixth grade. When they moved to Kerrville, they joined First Baptist Church of Kerrville and have been faithful attendees since then. She especially had enjoyed and appreciated Paul McClung’s lessons and the precious fellowship of fellow Christians in their Sunday school class. Besides her love of fishing, she enjoyed gardening, knitting and crocheting. Some of her special projects were making sweaters for Guidepost’s sweaters for orphans, making dolls of yarn for children in the hospital and lap afghans for Edgewater Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Grace J. Harrison and Ann Lawrence. Laura is survived by her husband of 62 years, Forrest Barnes of Kerrville; children, Roberta M.
